Johnny Cash scrisse e registrò “Folsom prison blues” il 29 luglio 1955 raggiungendo il quinto posto nella classifica Country. Egli si ispirò al film "Inside the walls of Folsom” del 1951. La canzone venne incisa per la Sun Records e fu la seconda pubblicazione per la piccola etichetta di Memphis. Cash la registrò una seconda volta nel 1968 (Columbia 44513) ed ottenne nuovamente un grande successo vincendo il Grammy Award per la miglior voce maschile Country & Western nel 1969.
Questa sua nuova registrazione fu 32° nella Hot 100 e prima nella classifica Country. Elvis eseguì alcune strofe di questa canzone assieme a "I walk the line" (un altro successo di Cash) il 14 agosto 1970 a Las Vegas, durante lo spettacolo di mezzanotte. Ad oggi, la possiamo ascoltare in oltre una decina di emissini bootleg.
